Audition for the Absolut Band
Absolut Vodka and Tim Vanhamel (formerly of "The Evil Superstars") teamed up to create "The Absolut Band". I entered this video as my audition for the band, knowing I wouldn't get picked in a million years. Still, I had a lot of fun coming up with the basic track and all the different guitar-layers on top.
The acoustic in the beginning wasn't performed on an actual guitar, but directly done in my DAW; I had to fake that for the video. For the synth-parts, however, I took the MIDI-out of my guitar-synth and used the sound-engine of Logic/Garageband. Due to latency problems, a lot of cleaning up was required; it was worth it! Finally, I used only three of the guitars that appear in the video to make the soundtrack. Can you guess which ones they are? The video isn't properly synchronized; that is because I had to mimic my own guitar-lines for the camera, and lip-synching is not what I do best. On the whole, I thought the video looked more or less acceptable... |
Boss 2010 World Looping Championship
Another magnificent piece of work; NOT! Given the rules of the Boss looping contest, I had to make an overdub of an original piece of audio (using a lot of Boss pedals). I have collected quite a number of Boss pedals over the years, so naturally, I went a little overboard.
Due to the contest deadline, I had about one hour to come up with something, have a couple of practice runs, and then I had a colleague from work tape it, while I was recording the audio into my computer. Not time for proper editing. Not only is the playing sloppy and under-rehearsed, I also miss a couple of pedal cues and make a couple of harsh mistakes. It makes quite a silly impression to see myself tap-dancing around for no obvious reason, other than to cram as many pedals in four minutes of music as possible. But on the other hand, it is one-shot live-stuff using over 10 effects. So switching problems, looping mistakes, very abrupt endings,... It was all good clean fun! |

Gibson vs. Dimarzio vs. Seymour Duncan
Time to put "my video" where my mouth is. I had been wanting to do a shootout video on replacement pickups for quite some time, and when I finally got the opportunity, I kinda messed it up... by being too eager!
Technical difficulties; again! After I bought my Q3-HD-camera, this was the test-footage I recorded with it. As you can see, the framing of the video was not premeditated, and, as fate would have it, the adjustable sound quality was on pretty much the lowest setting the device would allow. Which is why the difference between pickups is hard to notice. Also, I was making it up as I went along, and throughout my train of thought, it shows that I was winging it. On the other hand, I think the point I was trying to make, did still somehow make it across. And it is a good thing that I made these rookie mistakes early on: I'm planning to do some more "in-depth" videos on the topic in the near future, which I will more carefully plan ahead, to avoid further embarrassment |
